IMARA 360

Assessing, mapping and informing - Speak the same language as Africa's decision-makers and funders.

The tool assesses the maturity of every entrepreneurial offering and every innovation on a standardized scale, calibrated to the converging requirements of Africa's leading technical and financial support actors. It continuously maps the shifting geography of innovation ecosystems and their maturity. And it informs: founders in identifying the support best suited to their stage, and decision-makers in shaping the policies and mechanisms needed to advance their ecosystems.

You don't assess an established SME, a startup searching for a model and a deep tech project in the same way. Identify the one that matches your project to determine your framework.

R1 — Classic African SMEExecute a proven model

A formal (or formalizing) commercial business that sells an existing product or service to identified customers. It is not searching for a model: it runs a model whose viability is already known.

Who it is for: Trade, services, crafts or basic manufacturing, with paying customers and regular revenue (or revenue targeted in the short term).

Dominant risk: Operational and financialFunding: Debt: bank credit, microfinance, development finance institutions
R2 — African StartupSearch for a scalable model

A temporary organisation designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model under conditions of extreme uncertainty. It searches for a model where an established company executes one.

Who it is for: An innovative project aiming for rapid growth, whose product-market fit is not yet proven; digital, physical or hybrid solution.

Dominant risk: Market validationFunding: Equity: business angels, venture capital, specialized African funds
R3 — African Deep TechPush a scientific frontier

A project whose innovation rests on a significant scientific or engineering advance. It pushes the frontier of what is possible and applies science to the physical world, not only to the digital one.

Who it is for: Advanced materials, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, photonics, quantum… Most often a physical product, patents, a long cycle (valley of death, TRL 4–7).

Dominant risk: TechnologicalFunding: R&D grants, proof-of-concept funds, Deep Tech venture capital
